Overview:

This project aimed to offer the people of Valencia an alternative to the neglected and vandalized playgrounds that cluttered the Turia Park. We designed a playground that is more in line with the rest  of the park. We integrated sustainable and innovative play equipement with the existing natural elements of the park. Promoting creativity and physical activity while promoting connection with nature and community.

3 Primary Problems

1. Outdated

Many existing playgrounds in Turia Park are worn down, poorly maintained, and no longer meet the needs of users.

2. Disconnected

The playgrounds are disconnected from the parks vibrant natural landscape and rich cultural surroundings

3. Community

These play spaces fail to support meaningful interaction among children and families, missing the opportunity to strengthen valuable community ties.

Opportunity

Turia Park is a vibrant and scenic heart of Valencia, celebrated for its lush green spaces, cultural landmarks, and iconic attractions. However, the playgrounds are often neglected, vandalized. This gap presented an opportunity to reimagine playgrounds in Turia Park by designing play areas that harmonize with the parks natural and existing architectural beauty.

Variations

The final concept is a modular playground made of recycled rope, safely mounted onto existing trees without causing damage. The ropes connect two types of treehouses and can be adapted to any shape or size, blending into Turia parks natural landscape while fostering play, creativity, and community connection.

Reflection

This project provided me valuable experience in leading a diverse, international, and interdisciplinary team. I took on a collaborative leadership role—coordinating planning, managing progress, and ensuring deadlines were met—while actively contributing to the design process. Working with teammates from different cultures and academic backgrounds challenged me to adapt and communicate effectively, and helped me grow significantly during this exchange at a different university.
